This lesson focuses on the key developments in Nazi Germany during World War II and the far-reaching consequences of the conflict. Students will begin by understanding the features and impact of the German war economy, including the mobilisation of resources, the role of forced labour, and the shift to total war under Albert Speer.
The lesson then moves to a critical examination of Hitler’s racial policies. Students will make informed judgements on the aims, implementation, and devastating consequences of these policies, particularly the Holocaust, and explore how ideology shaped Nazi actions both at home and in occupied territories.
Attention will also be given to resistance within Germany, highlighting the bravery of individuals and groups who opposed the regime, such as the White Rose movement and the July Plot, and assessing the challenges they faced.
The latter part of the unit analyses the consequences of WWII, including the human and physical devastation in Europe, the defeat of Nazi Germany, and the shifting balance of global power. Finally, students will evaluate how the end of WWII led to the Cold War, focusing on tensions between the Allied powers, the division of Germany, and the emergence of two competing superpowers with conflicting ideologies.
