A Level Lenin Society, 1917-1924 Resources

This lesson focuses on the early years of Soviet Russia under Lenin’s leadership following the Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917. Students will begin by understanding the main features of Russia under Lenin, including the creation of a one-party state, the introduction of communist ideology, and the transformation of society, economy, and governance.

The lesson then examines how Lenin and the Bolsheviks consolidated power during a time of civil war, internal opposition, and economic collapse. This includes the role of the Red Army, the use of propaganda, and the suppression of rival political parties and uprisings, such as the Kronstadt Rebellion.

Students will assess the methods used by the Bolsheviks to rule, including the establishment of the Cheka (secret police), censorship, the use of terror, and the introduction of War Communism. These methods will be critically analysed for their effectiveness and long-term consequences.

Finally, the lesson discusses the impact of Lenin’s policies, such as the New Economic Policy (NEP), land reforms, and the nationalisation of industry. Students will evaluate how these policies affected different groups in Russian society and how they helped stabilise the regime while laying the groundwork for future Soviet rule.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the main features of Russia under Lenin;
  • Analyse how Lenin and the Bolsheviks consolidated power;
  • Assess the methods of rule by the Bolsheviks; and
  • Discuss the impact of Lenin’s policies.
