A Level Russian Revolutions, 1904-1917 Resources

This lesson explores one of the most dramatic periods in Russian history—the revolutions that led to the collapse of the Tsarist regime and the rise of the Bolsheviks. Students will begin by examining the causes and nature of the Russian Revolutions of 1905 and 1917, including deep-seated social inequalities, political repression, economic hardship, military failures, and growing discontent among workers, peasants, and soldiers.

The impact of these revolutions will be analysed, from the limited reforms following the 1905 Revolution to the complete dismantling of autocracy in 1917. Students will assess how these uprisings altered Russia’s political landscape and the extent to which they addressed the people's grievances.

Key events leading to the collapse of Russian autocracy will be discussed, including the role of World War I, the failures of Nicholas II, and the February Revolution of 1917. The weakening of Tsarist authority and the rise of revolutionary movements will be studied in depth.

Finally, students will evaluate the significance of the Provisional Government and the Bolsheviks.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the causes and nature of the Russian Revolutions in 1904 and 1917;
  • Analyse the impacts of the revolutions;
  • Discuss the events leading to the collapse of Russian autocracy; and
  • Evaluate the significance of the Provisional Government and the Bolsheviks to Russia by 1917.
