A Level Stalin and the USSR, 1924-1953 Resources

In this lesson, students will examine how Stalin emerged as the leader of the Soviet Union following Lenin’s death. The session will begin with an understanding of the leadership contest within the Communist Party and how Stalin used political strategy, alliances, and party control to defeat rivals such as Trotsky.

Students will then discuss Stalin’s methods of rule, including propaganda, censorship, purges, and the use of terror to maintain power and eliminate opposition.

The lesson will move on to analyse the policies of collectivisation and industrialisation, looking at their aims, implementation, and consequences for the Soviet economy and population—particularly the impact on peasants and workers.

Finally, students will assess the overall significance of Stalin’s leadership, considering both the successes in modernising the USSR and the human cost of his authoritarian regime.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the leadership contest and Stalin’s rise as leader of the Soviets;
  • Discuss Stalin’s method of rule;
  • Analyse the nature and impact of collectivisation and industrialisation in the USSR; and
  • Assess the significance of Stalin’s rule of the USSR.
