A Level The Kaiserreich, 1871-1914 Resources

This lesson examines the foundations and development of the German Empire from its unification in 1871 through to the early 20th century, culminating in the lead-up to World War I. Students will begin by exploring the political structure of the German Empire, focusing on its federal nature, the role of the Kaiser, the Chancellor, and the Reichstag, and how power was distributed within the system.

A key focus will be placed on the dominant role of Prussia, analysing how its political and economic influence shaped the empire. This includes an examination of Prussia’s military traditions, financial strength, and leadership in imperial governance, which often overshadowed the other German states.

The lesson also assesses the domestic policies and reforms introduced by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, including social legislation, attempts to suppress opposition, and his balancing act between conservatism and modernisation. These reforms are evaluated for both their immediate impact and their long-term effects on German society and politics.

Finally, students will evaluate the significance of the naval race between Germany and Britain, considering how military rivalry, imperial ambition, and shifting alliances contributed to growing tensions in Europe and the eventual outbreak of World War I.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the political structure of the German Empire;
  • Analyse the political and economic influence of Prussia on the new empire;
  • Assess Bismarck’s reforms; and
  • Evaluate the significance of the naval race in the outbreak of WWI.
