Events in Europe Resources

In this lesson, students will identify the key motives of Mussolini and Hitler, including their aims for territorial expansion, ideological dominance, and the dismantling of the post-WWI international order.

Students will then analyse why attempts to preserve peace failed between 1933 and 1941, examining key events such as appeasement, the remilitarisation of the Rhineland, the invasion of Abyssinia, and the Munich Agreement.

Finally, the lesson will evaluate the significance of alliances and pacts—including the Rome-Berlin Axis, the Anti-Comintern Pact, and the Nazi-Soviet Pact—and how these diplomatic moves paved the way for the outbreak of war in 1939.

Students will understand the aggressive aims of fascist leaders, the breakdown of international diplomacy, and how strategic alliances contributed to the eruption of WWII.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Identify the motives of Mussolini and Hitler in Europe;
  • Analyse how the attempts to make peace failed between 1933 and 1941; and
  • Evaluate the alliances made in the period and how they led to the outbreak of war in 1939.
