Events in the Far East Resources

In this lesson, students will trace the extent of Japan’s expansion in the Far East, including its conquests in Manchuria, China, and Southeast Asia, highlighting Japan’s growing imperial ambitions in the 1930s and early 1940s.

Students will then analyse how European events, such as the rise of fascism, appeasement, and the outbreak of war in Europe, influenced Japan’s foreign policy, encouraging greater aggression and opportunism in Asia.

The lesson will also evaluate the nature of imperial Japan’s expansion policy, focusing on its motivations—such as economic self-sufficiency, military dominance, and racial ideology—and the impact of its aggressive strategies on regional stability.

Finally, students will assess the reasons behind the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, including U.S. sanctions, Japan’s strategic goals in the Pacific, and its desire to neutralise American interference.

Students will understand how regional ambition, global developments, and strategic calculations led Japan to pursue war in the Pacific.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Trace the extent of Japanese expansion in the Far East;
  • Analyse how the events in Europe influenced Japan’s foreign policy;
  • Evaluate imperial Japan’s overseas expansion policy; and
  • Assess the reasons for the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor.
