Making peace 1919-33 and its aftermath Resources

In this lesson, students will analyse the aims of the Big Four—Britain, France, the USA, and Italy—at the Paris Peace Conference and explore how their conflicting goals shaped the Treaty of Versailles and its global consequences.

Students will then evaluate the significance of post-war treaties beyond Versailles, including those with Austria, Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, assessing how they redrew borders, created new states, and sowed seeds of future conflict.

Finally, the lesson will assess the effectiveness of the League of Nations between 1920 and 1933, considering its successes in resolving disputes, its structural weaknesses, and its limitations in preventing aggression.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Analyse the aims of the Big Four and the impact of the Treaty of Versailles;
  • Evaluate the significance of post- war treaties; and
  • Assess the effectiveness of the League of Nations in the years 1920 to 1933.
