As more and more people came to live in America new places to live were needed. The people started to move away from the cities and across America to the plains.
At first the Plains Indians welcomed the white people because they believed everyone had a right to share the land. After a little while problems started.

The white people were bringing lots of problems for the Indian people. To start with they killed the buffalo so there were not enough left for the Indians, then they started to take over land that had always been used by the Plains Indians. A big problem was that they brought disease, simple things like a cold made the Indians very ill and some even died.

The white people travelled in wagons pulled by horses sometimes hundreds came at the same time. The white people were looking for new places to live and also looking for gold to make them rich. There was lots of gold in the areas the Indians lived and the white people tried to force the Indians to leave. So the Plains Indians started to fight back.
