Please see below for information on a new professional development opportunity taking place at IWM Duxford. If you are interested in participating or would like more detailed information about the program please contact me, Holly Medland, AAM Learning Officer on hmedland@iwm.org.uk or by phone on 01223 497208 or mobile 07791584853.

The American Air Museum Summer Residency Program is a three week professional development opportunity which gives teachers from the UK and USA to share their teaching practice in a practical and creative environment. Participating teachers will collaborate on creating source- based learning sessions, immersed in the historical setting of a real WWII US Army Air Force Base, whilst improving their own understanding of the era.

The transatlantic nature of the program mirrors the wartime alliance between the two countries and will allow you to work with others who have different experiences and perspectives of history education. Working closely with other teachers, museum educators and freelancers you will develop learning sessions based on primary source evidence, which you will then test as part of an American-style summer camp attended by young people from Cambridgeshire. Following the three-week residency, you will be asked to use your experience on the program to lead a research project with your class who will share and compare their findings with students from the US.

This program is open to history teachers who are currently teaching classes of year 7 or 8 students. As this is the pilot year participation will be subsidised and the majority of entry fees, travel, accommodation, meals and tuition associated with the program will be covered by the museum.
