The Somme - documentary made in the 80s. Featured veterans who were still alive at that time.
The Tunnellers - C4 documentary voiced by Bernard Hill, about the clay kickers in Flanders and the Somme.

I've got "Last Survivors of the Great War" on VHS. Produced by a company based in Ypres. Also got two(???) copies of Granada Learnings "The Somme 1916" on VHS.
Either of these of any use?
Thanks Dan. You know how it is when you are very familiar with the content of a prog, having seen it so many times in class? I'd have to see the actual progs. Will hang fire just now but thanks for the offer.

The TV programme from the 1980s you refer to might well have been 'Lions led by Donkeys', a Channel 4 documentary made for the 70th anniverary of the Somme in 1986. It featured, amongst others, Charles Carrington (aka 'Charles Edmonds') author of one of the best junior officer accounts of the war. Alas it has also gone to VHS Valhalla but I still have an excellent Channel 4 documentary from the 'Hindsight' series on the making of the documentary film 'The Battle of the Somme', which is still (just about) holding body and soul together.

Without wishing to sound stupid but.... I can't think of many coaches that have video players in them. Most have swapped over to DVDs and so it's likely VHS will be pointless in which case this one is great http://shop.channel4...cid=23&pid=1631

My tech guy can transfer vids to digital / DVD no problem and has already done this for most of my dept collection. Unfortunately we abandoned curriculum teaching of WW1 10 years ago when we changed from Standard Grade to Intermediate courses so these vids were not included. More's the pity.

The trip finished night before last and I'm only just recovering. As intense as ever but greatly enjoyed by the pupils who took part. I also got to sit in a replica of Georges Guynemer's fighter plane. And thereby hangs a tale ...
