The National Assembly and the French Church

• Between 1789-1791 the National Assembly took a number of progressive actions to address the failing economy and tighten up the country
• The National Assembly was moving to put all religion under its authority
• They wanted a church for the nation that was less opulent than the Catholic Church
• In July 1790, the French Catholic Church itself fell prey to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, a decree by the National Assembly that established a national church system with elected clergy
• Louis XVI was a devout Catholic, and he was troubled by it all
