From 1509 to 1745, Britain underwent significant changes in terms of religion, social structure, economy, and attitudes. These have come to be known as the Elizabethan era, the Stuart period, and the Cromwell Period. For example, the Elizabethan era saw the establishment of Protestantism through the Church of England. It was also a time where art, culture and literature flourished. The Stuart Period was marked by civil wars and rebellions, which had a great effect on the daily lives of English people. During these turbulent times, many citizens experienced terrible poverty. As the population increased, living standards worsened, and many faced starvation. Come the rule of Puritan Oliver Cromwell as the Lord Protector of the Republic, strict rules were enforced which banned festivities, taverns, celebrating Christmas, and more.
