The House of Lords was composed of the most powerful landowning families. Membership was by appointment, so they did not exactly represent constituencies. Most members of the House of Lords did not have political parties either.

The House of Commons, meanwhile, was composed of elected Members of the Parliament (MPs) and was largely influenced by the landowning families.

Moreover, some lords did not support the main political parties. They were known as the Crossbenchers or Independent Peers.
