Bismarck and Kulturkampf Worksheet

• The new North German Confederation was predominantly Protestant but some parts of Southern Germany were Roman Catholic
• Bismarck viewed Catholicism as a challenge to his Protestant and conservative views and to Prussian domination of Germany
• During the 1870s Bismarck conducted a struggle with the Catholics which became known as the Kulturkampf
• The Kulturkampf was also useful for Bismarck’s foreign policies as well because it created closer links with the anti-clerical Italian government, with Russia, themselves greatly troubled by Catholic Poles, and with the National Liberals
