- Repression for the people of Russia had started even before the 1905 revolution had ended
- The workers and peasants had further reasons to feel incensed after 1905 by the Tsar’s backtracking over political reform
- Radical Bolsheviks began to infiltrate trade unions and working class groups
- There was also a growth of aggressive nationalist feelings
- Nicholas remained dedicated to autocracy but unable or unwilling to provide clear government
- Some historians have blamed Nicholas II for the eventual downfall of the regime in 1917
