Lesson Snapshot:

  • Russia by 1918 appeared to be in the hands of the communists (the Bolshevik Party) led by Lenin.
  • The Provisional Government had been overthrown and the Bolsheviks had appeared to have gained power in Russia and that the country’s problems seemed to be over.
  • In fact, those problems had only just begun.
    What was life like?
  • Life improved for many ordinary people in Lenin’s Russia. But Russia was now a dictatorship and anyone who openly criticised Communism risked losing their life.
  • Five aspects of the communist state
  • The Bolsheviks wanted to set up a Communist state. This comprised of five aspects:
  • Peace – as promised, Lenin made the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany in 1918. Russia was to lose a great deal of land which included 60 million people. The land also included 25% of her farming land and 75% of her iron ore and coal deposits.
  • Communist economy – the Bolsheviks gave the land previously owned by the nobles to the peasants, and factories were handed over to workers’ committees.
