Lesson Snapshot:

  • The first non-Communist trade union (an organisation of workers with common goals such as securing higher wages and fairer working conditions) in a Communist country.
  • First put forward by Lech Walesa in Poland in 1980.
  • It was originally led by Walesa in response to concerns about low wages and food shortages that the Polish government could not solve.
  • The organisation soon had ten million members. In August 1980 – Gdansk shipyard strike – gave polish workers the right to strike and organise their own independent trade union.
