  • In September 1939 the Nazis came up with a plan to round up all of the Jews in Poland, which they now controlled, and house them into specially created areas called ghettos
  • Several hundred ghettos were established in Poland alone
  • A ghetto would be a certain part of a town or city just for Jews
  • Walls and fences were built around the ghetto to keep the Jews in
  • In the ghetto a council of Jewish elders was appointed to run the ghetto efficiently
  • Life in the ghettos was very difficult
  • Staying alive in the ghettos was a way to resist the Nazis
