1. Traditional rivalries and alliances.
2. The US Civil War.
3. Commercial developments in the USA.
4. America’s new position as a major player in world politics.
5. The USA contained many ex-Europeans with their own traditional rivalries.
6. American Irish disliked Britain.
7. American Germans were still very loyal to Germany.
