Lesson Objective:

To evaluate evidence about Maximillien Robespierre to decide whether he was a hero of the French Revolution or the most hateful man in French history.

Lesson Snapshot:

Robespierre was a leading figure of the Revolution and certainly helped carry the Revolution through a crisis. He has been described as both ‘the most hateful character in history’ and the greatest man in History.

To some he protected the rights of the poor and led the Revolution at a time when it could have been easily overthrown. To others he was a cruel, ambitious monster who was responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent victims.

We will study sources to find out how two such different views of Robespierre have been created.
