Era of Palace Coups, 1725–1762 Resources

In this lesson, students will understand the reasons behind the coups, examining the unstable succession after Peter the Great’s death and how this led to frequent leadership changes driven by noble factions, military influence, and court intrigue.

The lesson will then assess the rule of Empress Elizabeth, focusing on her domestic and cultural policies, military involvement in the Seven Years’ War, and how her reign contributed to stability and the continued development of the Russian Empire.
Students will also analyse the extent to which Peter the Great’s reforms survived during this period, considering areas such as central government, military organisation, Westernisation, and the role of the nobility.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to explain the causes and consequences of the succession crises, evaluate Empress Elizabeth’s leadership, and critically assess the continuity and decline of Petrine reforms up to 1762.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the reasons and nature of the Era of Palace Coups and the struggles of succession;
  • Assess the changes in Russia under Empress Elizabeth; and
  • Analyse the extent of the survival of Petrine reforms until 1762.
