In this lesson, students will understand the nature of Peter I’s ascension to the Russian throne, including the power struggle during his early years and, the significance of his co-rule with Ivan V and the role of the Streltsy.
Students will then analyse the background and impacts of Peter I’s policy of Westernisation, examining how his travels to Europe influenced reforms in government, the military, culture, and society. Emphasis will be placed on changes such as the founding of St Petersburg, the reorganisation of the army, and the imposition of Western dress and customs.
Next, students will assess the significance of Russian modernisation for foreign affairs, especially how Peter’s reforms enhanced Russia’s position as a European power, including his victory in the Great Northern War and the expansion of Russian influence.
Finally, students will evaluate the responses to change in Petrine Russia, examining resistance from the nobility, the church, and the peasantry, as well as how Peter dealt with opposition to his reforms.
