OCR thematic paper themes and interpretations Russia 1855-1964. Looking at OCR guidance the recommendation is for thematic teaching throughout, what do others do? When I previously tried the thematic approach from the start my students felt they had no context to hang the history on and so asked for the chronological approach, then the themes were developed after they had the big picture. With now two years of teaching surely there is the time to do this. I have taught this for about 6 years, last years results were excellent, but trying to get to grips with the requirements of the new course. Any ideas or observations welcome.

Morning,

From our point of view, the guidance is given as we're looking for thematic responses in their essays so we style it thematically to ensure that message is clear. From a teaching point of view, my own preference was to go chronologically in the first instance and revise it thematically. Without an AS it certainly should in theory free up more time to do so. I found similar problems as you describe with the students I had, but found giving doing it that way supported them through the course. I'd also be interested to know how others tackle the thematic unit, particular those doing an AS level as well and would be great to hear tips and practical advice on the matter from current teachers. I think it would work, providing the students are clear about the demands of the questions.

Hello

I am teaching England in a New Century for the first time, is there any source skills revision booklets or guides? I find the textbook a little too wordy?

Good Morning,

We've recently commissioned a revision booklet covering the assessment for unit 1 which should be available soon. We do also have some material on www.cpdhub.ocr.org.uk which is free to download (they're materials from INSETs we've run) and they cover the assessment of the units. I'd also be more than happy to talk to you about any aspects of the course. You can email us directly at history@ocr.org.uk and we can arrange a time for me to ring if that would help?

Thanks

Grant
