KS3 Christendom and the Crusades Resources
The Crusades were a series of religious wars fought between Christian Europe and Islamic West Asia between the 11th and 13th centuries. They began with the First Crusade in 1096, after Pope Urban II encouraged Christians to reclaim Jerusalem and other holy sites from Muslim control. Many people joined the Crusades, motivated by religion, adventure, or the chance for wealth and land.
While religious reasons mainly drove the First Crusade, later crusades were increasingly shaped by political and economic motives. In total, there were nine major crusades, and their outcomes varied. Although the Christians briefly took control of Jerusalem, the long-term military success of the Crusaders was limited.
The Crusades had a lasting impact. They increased contact between Europe and the Islamic world, led to greater trade and the exchange of ideas, but also created deep religious divisions.
Learn more about the key factors that contributed to the birth of the Crusades, the establishment of the Crusader Kingdoms as a result of the First Crusade, the aims and importance of the First and Second Crusades during the early medieval period, the developments in trade and science brought by the Crusades, and the political, economic, intellectual, and religious impact of the Crusades on Europe with our KS3 resources.
