KS3 The development of the British empire Resources

From the 17th century, Europe entered an age of exploration during which superpowers including Spain, Portugal, England and the Netherlands expanded their territories around the world. The British Empire was made up of the colonies, protectorates, mandates and other territories that spanned one fifth of the world’s population and one quarter of the world’s landmass by 1922, making it the largest empire in history. Notable colonies that achieved independence from Britain include the United States of America in the 18th century, and India and a number of African countries in the 20th century. In the aftermath of WWII, Britain was economically and financially embattled and could not sustain its empire, leading to an era of decolonisation.
