USA – Mexico and the Caribbean

• Following the US Mexican War of 1848 tension was high.
• Mexico was bitter over the loss of territory.
• Mexico was now limited economically, politically and socially.
• Mexico would never be a threat to the US now.
• Mexico elected themselves a monarch, Maximilian, in the 1860s.
• This meant that by the 1870s Mexico was stable as a country.
• This encouraged the US to reestablish trade links etc with Mexico.
• The US began to pump in capital and people in Mexico.
