- The Nazis invaded Poland in September 1939
- By October 1940, they placed nearly 400,000 Jews in a 3.5 square mile area of Warsaw which usually housed 160,000 people
- Jews were forbidden to go outside the area on penalty of being shot on sight
- Hans Frank, the Nazi governor of occupied Poland, declared in 1941: “I ask nothing of the Jews except that they should disappear.”
